PEATON project is an integrated project for the industrial development, with a multidisciplinary character. It has the objective of manufacturing Expanded Polypropylene components which can be incorporated in structural and non-structural vehicle components. This is expected to improve passive security, together with a reduction of vehicle final weight. Both security improvement and weight reduction are two of the main drivers present in all the roadmaps of automotive sector.
Main objective of PEATON project is the development of new EPP materials (raw material), for the manufacturing, through eco-efficient processes, of lighter vehicle components with improved mechanical properties. Thereby, the project is presented as an opportunity for the development of cheaper, new EPP materials with tailored properties. Lighter components with the same mechanical properties can be produced, as well as an improved energy absorption can be reached throughout the modification of the cellular structure of the final material. This will allow the manufacturing of materials with targeted density or impact properties, according to the specific requirements. On the other hand, EPP manufacturing process will be optimised for an improved productivity, on the basis of an enhanced mould design and control systems.
Wide experience of AIMEN Technological Centre in the areas of materials research, advanced manufacturing process, life cycle and techno-economic analysis of products and processes, and computer modelling of automotive components, allows AIMEN taking part as a subcontractor in every one of all the different work packages in which the research project is divided.
