COMSENSO aims the development of laser-assisted WAAM for the multi-material metallic components manufacturing, in order to overcome the main barriers that are being faced by Additive Manufacturing in industry: to achieve high-productivity rates and trend to zero-defect manufacturing.
So, COMSENSO pursues the metallic big-sized components additive manufacturing. Particularly, in the scope of COMSENSO steel/invar and stainless steel/Ni alloy (Inconel) combinations will be approached for aeronautic and metal-mechanic industrial sectors, even though the project goals could be easily extrapolated to multiple sectors (railway, energy, etc.).
Currently, Direct Energy Deposition techniques, such as WAAM (based on Gas Metal Arc Welding-GMAW conventional process), are receiving particular attention by industry and experimenting an important knowledge growth. Besides its high deposition rate, WAAM still needs some improvements to increase its competitiveness. Those are related to productivity and particularly, quality. COMSENSO will face these challenges, by ensuring process stability, in order to guarantee a zero-defect manufacturing.
