Flexible manufacturing processes for customised production of high quality fiber optic sensors

  • Start: 01/10/2023
  • End: 01/09/2026

The FLEXOR project will develop a new manufacturing methodology that will overcome the limitations of the methods currently used in the production of fibre optic FBG sensors. This will combine advanced laser processing techniques using femtosecond (fs) lasers for the engraving of fibre optic Bragg gratings (FBG), metal layer deposition techniques using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and techniques for the application of metal coatings using electrodeposition. This new methodology will allow, on the one hand, to flexibly design and manufacture fibre optic sensors based on customised and functionalised Bragg networks in order to induce a specific spectral response depending on the parameters to be detected (temperature, deformation, H2 gas content) and, on the other hand, to ensure the structural integrity of the FBG sensor and, therefore, its spectral response, in extreme environments through the application of protective coatings. The new manufacturing methodologies developed in the FLEXOR project will be implemented through different modular prototype systems incorporating the necessary devices and elements. Finally, different FBG sensor demonstrators will be developed using the modular prototype systems built, which will be evaluated for their application in standard monitoring environments, H2 gas detection and monitoring in extreme conditions.
