High stability metal coated fibre optics for distributed monitoring of high temperature infrastructure

  • Start: 01/01/2022
  • End: 30/06/2024

FRONTIER overall objective is to enable the commercially viable deployment of fibre optics sensing solutions to monitor high temperature processes, for which highly resistant and stable sensors are required. High temperature processes showing high temperature peaks/gradients, corrosive environment and vibrations are one of the most difficult processes to monitor and control in industry (i.e., power generation, high temperature processing, aircraft engines, etc). Such environments require sensors with electromagnetic interference immunity, durability to harsh/corrosive environments, remote sensing capability, multiplexing capability, wide operating range, and allow long-distance interrogation without an electrical interface. Fibre optic sensors provide a good solution for many of these challenges, however due to their mechanical fragility they need to be externally protected to ensure mechanical stability against highly demanding conditions and unplanned events.

AIMEN has developed and demonstrated in relevant environment (TRL6) a new highly resistant and cost-effective fibre optic sensing technology based on their protection by highly stable metal coatings.

FRONTIER proposes two set of objectives to materialise the commercialization of AIMEN´s developed knowledge: i) technical objectives aiming at maturing and validating the technology to overcome uncertainties and risks associated to current TRL better attracting technology transfer opportunities, and ii) commercialisation strategy definition aiming at identifying the target market and the roadmap to be followed to reach a value proposition based on market needs.
