Construction industry is one of the biggest consumers of resources and responsible for over 35% of EU’s total waste generation. Additionally, GHG emissions from material extraction and manufacturing are estimated at 10% of total emissions. Thus, the stringency to comply with EU policies together with the shortage and increase in the price of raw materials and the lack of skilled labor, are putting the sector under pressure. In this context, green concretes formulated with waste-based precursors are considered promising eco-friendly materials to reduce the dependence on OPC, responsible of 8% of total CO2 emissions.
GeoS2·3D will focus on the application of a sustainable construction methodology backed on novel technologies (wastes alkaline activation) and advanced manufacturing processes (3D printing) to obtain new binders with improved properties. A thorough selection and conditioning of wastes, controlled reaction parameters and precise curing conditions will allow to obtain a workable geopolymer with tailored properties in terms of mechanical strength and thermal/acoustic insulation. Combining the potential of optimized functional materials with 3D printing will allow to standardize the production of new materials as well as boosting the adoption of green binders in the sector.
GeoS2·3D consortium will provide a holistic solution to develop sustainable geopolymers from different sources while simultaneously enhancing these materials and adapt them for additive manufacturing. The project will develop and validate two prototypes comprising of two panels for thermal and acoustic insulation effectively demonstrating the augmented worth of these products for the ultimate consumer.
