The PROMETHEUS project aims to develop a high power ultra-short pulse laser for the high-speed and high-accuracy laser surface texturing.
In particular, PROMETHEUS will develop a laser surface texturing technology that will enable the functionalization of polymers, metals and ceramics by means of a direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) technique. The laser system to be developed will also include an optical inspection system for the in-line monitoring and control of the laser texturing process, this will enable to detect deviations of the generated textures from the ideal case and modify the necessary laser parameters during the fabrication process. The Technology Centre AIMEN will be in charge of the optical inspection system development. In addition, AIMEN will make available to the project its laser equipments for the necessary surface texturing tests, as well as our knowledge in the generation of functinal textures.
It is expected that the integrated laser processing demonstrator system developed in PROMETHEUS will deliver unprecedented surface texturing speeds of up to 2-5 m2/min and enable high resolution features down to 1 μm to be produced with minimal heat impact on work pieces. As end-users, Maier, Johnson and Johnson, Fiat Chrysler Automobile group and Arcelik, leaders of their respective industrial sectors, will be able to assess the results provided by PROMETHEUS laser system in each use case.
